ONE CHRISTMAS, MANY TRADITIONS

Hi!
Chrismas is drawing near!
Merry Christmas, Feliz Natal, Happy Christmas, Hauskaa Joulua, Bo Nadal, Sheng Tan Kuai Loh, Gëzuar Krishlindjet Vitin e Ri!, Fröhliche Weihnachten, Shenoraavor Nor Dari yev Pari Gaghand, Bones Navidaes & Gayoleru anu nuevu!, Zalige Kertfeest, Tchestito Rojdestvo Hristovo, Tchestita Koleda, Sretan Bozic, Glaedelig Jul, Srecen Bozic, Gajan Kristnaskon & Bonan Novjaron... These are only a few of the many different ways people use to wish each other Merry Chrismas around the world. Similarly people celebrate Christmas in many different ways around the world.

I think that everybody knows how Christmas is celebrated here, in the Basque Country. The Olentzero is the most outstanding figure among Basque children. This mythological character is very similar to Father Christmas or Santa Claus; but he has some special traits. He comes on Christmas Eve and he leaves a lot of presents for everyone, especially children who have been 'good' through the year; but if their behavior has been bad, he only leaves them some coal. The Olentzero has his face smeared with coal, wears a beret and basque traditional garb smokes a pipe and carries a gix bag. In the Basque Country some people also celebrete Christmas on  the 5 of January. That's when the Three Magi arrive.

In Argentina, on Christmas eve,   families and friends meet and when the clock strikes 12, they throw rockets and fireworks. They usually   decorate the tree after that  and then they open the presents. During all the weekends of December, they make farewell parties with friends and coworkers at home or at restaurants. For their family dinners it is common for all the members to bring something to eat.

In the United Kingdom,   the mistletoe is very traditional  because people think it keeps them from  demons and also it brings them good luck in the house. Also, people say that kissing  a boy under the mistletoe brings good luck. So, if  you are ever  under a mistletoe and you see a boy kiss him under it! In Great Britain Christmas would not be the same without the "crackers", a type of firecracker. This type of firecracker contains a cap, a suprise present and a gum.

In Italy, during the "notte di Capodanno", I mean, the last day of the year, it is typical to eat a plate of lentils and the to go out to the disco. Women normaly receive red lingerie as a present because they believe this will bring them good luck during the year. And in Rome and Naples, they throw old junk to start the new year properly. To make a fresh start!

In Australia, Christmas are celebrated in summer, because Australia is located in the other hemisphere so while we are freezing cold here Australians are enjoying summer. So there they celebrate Christmas at the beach and with Father Christmas in shorts and flip-flops. In my opinion, it would be fantastic to celebrate Christmas there, because it is hot and I would be able to go to the sunbathe!

These are some of the many places were Christmas is celebrated. As we can see, depending on the country Christmas is celebrated differently!
No matter where you live I WISH YOU A VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS!

I hope you like it!

Do you know what the inventions that have contributed most to our lives are?

Hi!

In this article I'm going to write about two important inventions that have contributed most to our lives. There have been a lot of important inventions through the history, but from my point of view, the most important inventions are the light bulb and the car. I think, that everybody knows what the wheel and the alphabet are.

The alphabet

From my point of view, the alphabet is one of the most important inventions in history . It seems like a bullshit, as nowadays everybody knows what the alphabet and the components of the alphabet are, but if we start thinking, a long time ago, very few people could write, and if nobody had invented the alphabet, nobody would know how to write. Also, thanks to the alphabet we can do different things such as write books, magazines, articles... People say that the alphabet was invented in Syria and Palestine in 1700 before Christ, so it seems difficult to believe how it has been transmitted from generation to generation.

First, a long time ago, when people started writing, they wrote on top of stones. Then, some years later, the Egyptians invented the "papyrus", then it came the "parchment" and then the printing that was invented by Johannes Gutenberg in 1450, the paper has been evolving during lots of years, until nowadays. The history of paper is related with the alphabet because, without the alphabet, we couldn't write, and if we couldn't write, we wouldn't need any paper.

The wheel

In my opinion, another important invention in history is the wheel. The wheel is a very important thing for me because nowadays, everybody uses it, for cars, or bicycles or also some people use it for swings. The most important use of the wheel is to use it in cars, because without the wheel, the car wouldn't go, so we couldn't move to other places.

The wheel was invented in the bronze Age by the neolithic people. The first function of the will was "the potter wheel". Then, they invented the cart and they used it there. Like in the cart, they used it in cars, bicycles...

The first wheel was a simple wood wheel, but then they invented a wheel with some radios, and because of that they could invent faster vehicles. After this type of wheel, they invented a wheel with a stronger wood and with some brass rings until the wheel that we have nowadays. Thanks to the wheel, people could carry a lots of things, so then the work was much easier. Nowadays, thanks to the wheel, we can move very easily through our city or through one country.

As a conclusion, for me these are the most important inventions in history, because without these inventions, we couldn't move or we couldn't write. Also, there are a lot of more interesting and important inventions, such as Internet, television, music... but if I have chosen these two is because they are more useful than those other inventions. What is your opinion about it? Leave a comment.

I hope that you like it!

Do you know what happened on September 11th?

Hi!
If I talked to you about September 11th, what would you think about?  I suppose, that the first think that you have thought of is the famous September 11th, when the two twin towers were knocked down. That is true, the most important event was probably that, but also in other years, other interesting things happened .

On September 11th 2001, the two towers of the World Trade Center in New York City were attacked in a terrorist attack. They say that the attack was carried out by Al-queda, and around 3000 people died in this horrible attack. When this happened, I was 7 years old, so I don't remember what my reaction was. But I asked my mother, and she told me that when she arrived home, my brother told her what happened, and she felt very amazed.

As I have mentioned earlier, other interesting events happened around the history of september 11th. To start with, I found two important events that happened in the Basque Country. The first happened in 1974 when ETA killed the civil guard Marti Durán Grande in Nafarroa. Martin was chasing one terrorist, and suddenly, the terrorist shot him. The second happened in 2007, 2 years ago, when the National High Court sentenced Juan Mari Olano to prison. They sent him accused of integrating a criminal band and of inciting to street terrorism.

But the Basque Country is not the only place where September 11th is an important date. To start with, not a long time ago, in 2004 a helicopter crashed in the Aegean Sea. About 20 people were killed: Patriarch Peter VII of Alexandria and some journalists and bishops of the Greek Orthodox Church of Alexandria were in the helicopter, and they died. Another interesting event happened in 1997 when NASA's Mars Global surveyor reached Mars. The following photograps are some photos of the Mars Global surveyor and of Mars:

The third important event happened in 1992, when the hurricane Iniki devastated Hawaii, especially the islands of Kauai and Oahu. They say that it was the most damaging hurricane in the United States. It was a category 4 hurricane and it caused 6 deaths in total.

Continuing with the hurricanes, in 1961 another hurricane took place, it was called Hurricane Carla. It struck the Texas coast as a Category 4 hurricane and it caused 43 deaths. It was the strongest storm ever to Texas. This is one photo of Texas after the Hurricane Carla.

Those are some events that happened on the famous date, September 11th. Of course there are other events, although I have selected the ones I found most interesting.  I hope that you will like it!
